Transparency in Government

While knocking on doors in Bovill during my 2014 County Commissioner campaign, I came across a family who had many questions for me about the role of the government. My unexpected presence in their gathering spawned a lengthy conversation about what a county does, what a city does, and how private citizens can participate by voting. One family member lived across the county line in Shoshone County, and another across the line in Clearwater County. They were very interested in learning about the different counties, how services are provided, and how (and where) decisions are made.

That conversation made me realize the importance of Latah County being in a position to demonstrate good government. And that recognition led to my campaign promise to implement a series of County Commissioner meetings to be held away from the Latah County Courthouse in Moscow.

Since January 2016, we have conducted nineteen County Commissioner (BOCC) meetings outside of the courthouse in seven rural towns, and in one grange building. That series of meetings has helped to produce connections between County, city, state and federal governments. One example of the progress is the work to replace the US post office in Deary.
